Gang Violence

What is Gang Violence?

Gang violence is a group of people who through the organization, formation, and establishment of an assemblage shared common identify.

This project is important to us because we have family members in gangs and they all are involved in gang violence and we wanted to know what the enjoyment is in being in a gang.

The subject of gangs is one that is commonly associated with the male gender because the violent acts committed by many gangs are typically viewed by society as “masculine” acts.

Facts:

~ It is estimated that 94% of gang members were male and 6% are female.

~ 47% of gang members are Hispanic,37% African American,13% White,and 79% Asian

~ More than 24,500 gangs were active in the U.S. in 2000.

~ It is estimated that 772,500 people in the U.S. were members of gangs in 2000, a drop of 8% from the number of active members in 1999, but again cities with population over 25,000 experienced an increase in the number of active gang memebers despite the overall drop.

~ 50% of gang members were under the age of 18, but only 37% of gang members were estimated to be under the age of 18.

Gang violence is one of the top leading causes of death of young teenagers because of drugs, sex, violence, and money.

Guns are the main leading cause of death in gang violent.

Statistics:

~ 3,000 jurisdictions across the U.S. are estimated to have had gang activity in 2001.

~ 35% of suburban countries reported gang activity in 2001.

~ 11% of rural countries reported gang activity in 2001.

~ 100% of cities with population greater than or equal to 25,000 reported gang activty in 2001.

~ 69% of cities with population at least 100,000 reported having homicides in 2001.

How to prevent gang violence?

1.) Focus on your family and friends: If family and friends are the source of love, guidance, and protection that youths seek, they are not forced to search for these basic needs from a gang.

2.) Teach someone about the risk of drugs.

3.) Stay in school: young people who successfully participate in and complete education have greater opportunities to develop into reasonable adults.

4.) Start a graffiti removal program: Graffiti removal reduces the chance that crimes will be committed. Since gangs use graffiti to mark their turf, advertise themselves, and claim credit for a crime, quick removal is essential.

5.) Join a conflict resolution program: these teach people how to deal better with conflicts and help eliminate gang intimidation tactics.

6.) Participate in recreational programs such as sports, music, drama, and community activities help build a sense of self-worth and self-respect in young people. Youths involved in such activities are less likely to seek membership in a gang.
